Overview

Spellbreak is a PvP RPG set in a ravaged fantasy world filled with elemental magic and emergent gameplay. Starting from nothing, players loot, choose upgrades, and defeat enemy players to become the ultimate battlemage.

In the world of Spellbreak, you assume the role of a Breaker, a magically gifted outcast who has come to the Hollow Lands to take as much power as you can and get out.

History

Spellbreak is set in an area once known as the Highlands and now known only as the Hollow Lands. The various fights for power and treasure take place after an event called the Fracture.

The Fracture and the Spellstorm that came along with it changed the face of the Highlands forever and made it not just uninhabitable but lethal to the former denizens.

Garrick has written some of the important history related to Highlands and what caused the Fracture in Garrick's Journal.

Culture

Humans

The human race in Spellbreak is divided into three factions:

  • VowKeepers: Also known as Keepers, are a very religious group of people, that stick to very specific forms of beliefs and zealotry. They have taken a vow to never use magic in their quest for knowledge and understanding.
  • VowBreakers: Also known as Breakers, have chosen to break the sacred vow of not practicing magic, through the use of Vital Stones, and are in an forever on-going feud with the Keepers.
  • VowGuards: Also known as Guards, are the strong arm of the Keepers, acting as a sort of military force, ensuring that the use of magic is kept outlawed. Though the Guards themselves are allowed to use it.

Prisma

The Prisma are a new race (presumably cat-like?) that have yet to be introduced to the game. Their capital city is known as Vidallah. Garrick mentions how they used to be a trading partner of Halcyon over a century ago.

Currency & Trade

In the Highlands there is both regular currency, as well as the trading of valuable items. Some of these items include magic-induced runestones, and gems of different variety called Brilstones, Vital Stones & Elan Stones.

Their value varies with the quality and the cuts of the gems. Brilstones are said to be source of a Gauntlet's power.

Magic

Elemental Magic

Elemental Magic draws from the power of the world itself to manipulate the elements. Specially crafted-gauntlets with special gems allow a user to attune to a specific element and wield it against their foes.

On the one hand, this makes elemental magic an extremely powerful tool, even out of combat.

On the other hand, elemental magic has had disastrous effects on the Highland as it is suspected to be a major cause of the Spellstorm in some way that caused The Fracture.

Breaker's wield elemental magic when they are looting the Hollow Lands to protect themselves for other breakers and who knows what else lurks in the Elemental Chaos of the Hollow Lands.

Runic Magic

Runic Magic involves scrolls and special glyphs (characters) that contain certain effects. Very little is known about Runic Magic save by Garrick and a handful of VowKeepers. It is said that the Prisma once practiced runes.

Runic magic seems to take a couple major forms:

  • Scrolls that contain glyphs that alter a user's abilities
  • Runestones that channel runic magic
  • Runechips that serve simple tasks

Garrick has found several examples of Runic Magic in the vaults of the VowKeeper's as well as in the remains of the Hollow Lands.

Some Breakers use runic magic to augment their abilities while in the Hollow Lands and gain an edge over their opponents. It's even said that some Breakers use runic magic to alter their appearance or taunt their foes.

Geography & Architecture

The current state of the Highlands is known to most breakers through crudely shared maps. The Highlands, however, have been separated from the rest of the world for at least 2 generations. Who knows what else may lurking in a world overridden by elemental magic?

The castles and villages' style is a hybrid between nordic and japanese architecture.
